Unfortunately, we hear more and more stories of unethical behaviour in the personal sphere. Scientists can be victims of bullying, non-inclusion, discrimination and unethical (sexual) behavior.
Psychological safety is a condition in which you feel:
- Included
- Safe to learn
- Safe to contribute
- Safe to challenge the status quo
In our workshops, we discuss individual experiences and ways to deal with toxic behaviours. Supervisors of PhD students and/or leaders of a group have a strategic role in this. A leader’s most important job – above that of creating a vision and setting strategy- is to act in the role of social architect and nourish a context in which people are given the respect and permission to feel included, learn, contribute and innovate. We discuss actions to be taken by them to create a social safe environment.
